FED: Howard challenges Beattie over petrol prices

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE could cut the price
of petrol in his state by handing back to motorists the tax revenue his state receives.

Mr BEATTIE has been an outspoken critic of recent petrol price rises, which is now
running at $1 a litre.

Mr HOWARD says the world price of oil has soared and is the major component of rising
petrol prices.

He says not even the president of the United States can do anything about the world price of oil.

The Prime Minister accused Mr BEATTIE of engaging in an unmitigated political stunt
by calling for another inquiry into petrol prices.

Speaking on Brisbane radio 4BC, Mr HOWARD also accused Mr BEATTIE of not giving the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission the necessary powers needed to act on this
issue.
