Fed: Telstra cutbacks threaten health

Labor Senator SUE WEST says Telstra's move to withdraw its paging service from rural
and regional New South Wales will seriously affect emergency services.

Senator WEST says removing the paging system on June 30 is a serious mistake because
there's no reliable replacement system.

She says pagers are one of the most important tools rural doctors and health workers
use in the course of their duties.

The Australian Medical Association has also expressed concern about Telstra's decision.

Senator WEST says replacing the paging service with mobile phones is not an option in some cases.

She says the phones can interfere with medical equipment and there's also a lack of
phone coverage in regional areas.
